Vaccinium myrtillus is a species of shrub with edible fruit of blue color, commonly called "bilberry", "whortleberry" or European blueberry. Vaccinium myrtillus is found natively in Europe, northern Asia, Greenland, Western Canada, and the Western United States.

Bilberries are grown in Europe, Canada and the U.S. and extracts of the ripe berry are known to contain flavonoid pigments known as anthocyanins - which act as powerful antioxidants. Bilberry extracts are now promoted for a number of vision and vein health effects such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.
