The blackberry is an aggregate fruit that is composed of many smaller fruits called drupes. The fruit is very dark purple with smooth, fragile skin. In the middle of the cluster is a greenish-white core that extends to almost the bottom of the berry. Blackberries are red and hard when they are immature and turn black and shiny when they ripen.

Blackberry is a fruit of interest due to its high levels of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds, mainly flavonols and ellagitannins, which contribute to its high antioxidant capacity and other biological activities. Blackberries are particularly rich in cyanidin glycosides which are effective antioxidant compounds able to reduce deleterious effects of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation in vitro. We currently know that in vivo, blackberry phenolic compounds have protective effects on age-related neurodegenerative diseases, and bone loss, and can inhibit LDL and liposomal oxidation in vitro. Blackberry extracts have also exerted anti-mutagenic effects in vitro and in vivo by modifying cell signaling pathways and suppressing tumor promotion factors.
