Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a flowering plant species in the celery family Apiaceae or Umbelliferae. It is the sole species in the genus Foeniculum. It is a hardy, perennial herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. It is indigenous to the shores of the Mediterranean but has become widely naturalized in many parts of the world, especially on dry soils near the sea-coast and on riverbanks.

 

Fennel is a perennial herb. It is erect, glaucous green and grows to height of up to 2.5m, with hollow stems. Fennel seed is used as a flavoring agent in many herbal medicines and help disperse flatulence. The seeds and the roots also help to open obstruction of the liver, spleen &gall bladder, and to ease painful swellings, in addition to helping with yellow with jaundice, the gout and occasional cramps.
